SELECTED WORK / VONNEN

Building a new category of performance for Vonnen.

BoostedGroup developed the category strategy, identity, positioning, and launch platform for Vonnen, a newly formed spinoff of renowned Porsche tuning house Elephant Racing that was introducing performance-hybrid technology for classic Porsche vehicles.

THE INFLECTION POINT

Hybrid technology had a perception problem.

When Vonnen was formed, most people associated hybrid vehicles with fuel economy. The Toyota Prius and Honda Insight had established the technology as an efficient and responsible alternative, but not as a source of serious performance or enthusiast appeal.

At the same time, advances in electric motors, batteries, controls, and power electronics were creating opportunities that extended well beyond efficiency. Vonnen recognized that hybrid technology could add meaningful horsepower and torque to an existing performance car while preserving the qualities that made the original vehicle desirable.

The technology was ready to support a different proposition. The market still needed a clear way to understand it.

THE CHALLENGE

The challenge was to explain a fundamentally different path to performance.

Vonnen had developed a system that added electric power to Porsche sports cars without replacing their original internal-combustion drivetrains. The engineering proposition was compelling, but it did not fit neatly into an established market category.

Traditional engine tuning could deliver additional power, but it could also introduce compromises involving noise, vibration and harshness, emissions compliance, reliability, drivability, and the potential loss of value associated with modifying an otherwise original car.

Shadow Drive offered a different path. The system could provide substantial additional performance while leaving the original engine largely untouched and preserving the character, usability, and integrity of the vehicle. Vonnen needed to redefine what hybrid technology could mean to a performance enthusiast.

THE WORK

BoostedGroup built the market platform from the ground up.

BoostedGroup was initially engaged as a consulting and commercialization partner. The work included defining the new performance-hybrid category and positioning Vonnen at the intersection of automotive heritage, advanced technology, sustainability, and modern performance.

BoostedGroup named and positioned the technology Shadow Drive, creating an identity that reflected the way electric power operated alongside the original drivetrain rather than replacing it.

The central proposition was clear: Vonnen could deliver a substantial increase in performance without requiring owners to accept many of the traditional compromises associated with extracting more power from an existing engine.

THE DEMO REEL

The launch film made the technology immediate and visceral.

The demo reel became the clearest expression of the Vonnen proposition. It translated a complex engineering system into a driving experience that enthusiasts could understand immediately and showed that electrification could add meaningful performance without erasing the qualities that made the original Porsche desirable.

THE LAUNCH

The launch reframed hybrid technology as a source of serious performance.

Rather than relying on a technical explanation alone, the launch showed how Shadow Drive changed the driving experience while preserving the essential character of the car.

The system could deliver additional power and torque while retaining the combustion engine, manual interaction, design, and emotional qualities of the original Porsche. That distinction allowed Vonnen to occupy territory that neither traditional aftermarket tuners nor mainstream hybrid manufacturers had claimed.

THE IMPACT

The response validated the category far beyond the Porsche aftermarket.

Vonnen established itself as an early leader in performance-hybrid technology and earned recognition from leading automotive and technology publications.

Shadow Drive won Popular Science’s Best of What’s New award, with Audi named runner-up. For a newly formed company competing against one of the world’s largest and best-funded automotive manufacturers, the result provided unusually strong validation of both the technology and the market proposition.

The technology also reached the market several years before Porsche introduced its own production hybrid 911, underscoring how early Vonnen had recognized the performance potential of hybrid technology.

The consulting engagement led directly to operating leadership.

The success of the initial BoostedGroup engagement led Vonnen to bring David Vespremi into the company as Vice President of Marketing. In that role, he continued developing the category, brand, launch platform, commercialization strategy, and market presence established through the consulting work. The transition reflected the company’s confidence in the strategic foundation that had been created and explains why Vonnen also appears as a full-time leadership role in his professional history.

WHY IT MATTERS

Breakthrough technologies often reach the market before customers have a familiar framework for understanding them.

Vonnen required more than a product launch. The company needed a category, a vocabulary, and a market proposition that could explain why hybrid technology belonged in a classic performance car and why it offered advantages that conventional tuning could not.

The result was a new approach to performance that anticipated the direction of the broader automotive industry by several years.
