BoostedGroup helped OpTerra reposition UtilityVision from an energy-monitoring dashboard into an expert-managed energy intelligence platform for large-scale commercial and public-sector efficiency programs. The work continued through OpTerra's acquisition by ENGIE and expanded into product strategy, messaging, customer experience, and corporate website planning.

THE INFLECTION POINT

Large-scale energy projects needed a clearer way to prove their results.

Factories, universities, school districts, municipalities, and other institutional customers were investing millions of dollars in solar installations, lighting upgrades, heating and cooling systems, building controls, and other infrastructure intended to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Completing the retrofit was only the beginning, because customers also needed to know whether the improvements were performing as promised, where energy was still being wasted, and how to demonstrate the results to boards, administrators, taxpayers, parents, employees, and other stakeholders.

OpTerra had developed UtilityVision to monitor those projects and report on their performance. Although the opportunity was substantial, the positioning was not yet clear.

Commercial and institutional facilities required credible monitoring, reporting, and accountability after construction was complete.
THE CHALLENGE

UtilityVision had to become more than another energy dashboard.

The energy-monitoring market was already crowded with software platforms, equipment vendors, and subscription-based dashboards. Many offered attractive interfaces, customizable graphs, emailed reports, alerts, and other familiar software features.

UtilityVision's advantage was not simply its ability to collect and display energy data. OpTerra also had the engineering expertise, customer relationships, financing knowledge, and implementation capabilities to interpret the information, recommend corrective action, and carry the work through to completion.

The initial analysis showed that monitoring without interpretation and follow-through had limited value. Facility managers were already overloaded, customers frequently did not know what to do with the data they received, and many preferred to rely on OpTerra to monitor performance and address problems on their behalf.

Customers needed confidence.

They wanted proof that projected savings were being achieved and that problems would be identified before they undermined the investment.

Data needed context.

Graphs and alerts mattered only when customers understood what had changed, why it mattered, and what they should do next.

Service was the differentiator.

OpTerra could connect monitoring to expert analysis, engineering recommendations, financing, and implementation.

CUSTOMER RESEARCH

Customers did not want more data; they wanted clearer results.

The interviews uncovered a recurring contradiction: customers expressed interest in energy data, but often lacked the time, expertise, or internal resources to interpret it. Some logged into the system regularly, while others relied primarily on monthly reports or on OpTerra's team to respond when something went wrong.

The data also served different purposes for different stakeholders. A facility manager wanted to know whether a piece of equipment was failing, a chief business officer wanted confirmation that the projected savings were being achieved, and a school administrator might need graphs for a board presentation while a sustainability leader wanted to communicate carbon reductions to the broader community.

The platform needed to make the information useful without forcing every customer to become an energy analyst.

THE WORK

BoostedGroup built the commercialization strategy around real customer behavior.

BoostedGroup conducted a broad commercialization and product-strategy engagement spanning market analysis, customer research, internal stakeholder interviews, messaging, positioning, user experience, product priorities, sales enablement, and go-to-market planning.

The work began with an assessment of the energy-management category and the competitive landscape, then examined where conventional dashboards fell short, what differentiated OpTerra's operating model, and how UtilityVision could support the company's core energy-services business.

The research established that UtilityVision should be positioned as a managed solution rather than a self-service software product. The most valuable outcome was not access to data, but the ability to translate that data into informed action.

The opportunity extended beyond the dashboard.

BoostedGroup proposed a UtilityVision community portal that would place monitoring within a broader system of support. The goal was not to beautify the dashboard in isolation, but to create an environment that helped customers understand what the information meant and what they should do next.

The proposed experience combined monitoring and reporting with training, searchable help, thought leadership, videos, customer support, events, and opportunities for deeper expert engagement.

Energy infrastructure could become part of the educational experience.

Schools, community colleges, and universities presented an additional opportunity because OpTerra was already collecting data from solar arrays, lighting systems, heating systems, and other infrastructure installed across educational campuses.

UtilityVision could allow students and teachers to examine real energy use, compare system performance, understand environmental impact, and connect classroom instruction with the physical infrastructure around them.

The research identified strong interest in customized curricula, teacher training, virtual laboratories, lesson plans, and tools that could help schools communicate energy and carbon savings to parents, boards, and local communities.

The engagement continued as OpTerra moved through its acquisition by ENGIE. BoostedGroup evaluated how UtilityVision could retain its distinctive strengths while aligning with adjacent energy-management capabilities within the broader organization.

The objective was to avoid duplication, preserve a coherent customer experience, and ensure that monitoring, analysis, engineering expertise, and implementation support could operate as a connected system.

The work helped position UtilityVision for its next phase without losing sight of the public-sector and institutional customers for whom the platform had originally been developed.
